Performances and workshops from 2pm - 6pm
on Boston Common, with As You Like It at 8pm.
Celebrate Shakespeare Day is a free event presented by Citi
Performing Arts Center's Education Department.

Throughout July, community partner organizations in Cambridge,
Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and the South End held workshops
where participants discovered how enjoyable the world of theatre
can be.  Through performing art skills building including theater
games, ensemble building, and original scene development,
participants became familiar with the story line and universal
themes of As You Like It.  On Saturday, August 2nd, representatives
from each neighborhood along with area theatre companies such
as Huntington Theatre, will perform a showcase on the Boston
Common as part of Celebrate Shakespeare Day.

Celebrate Shakespeare Day includes fun for all ages, interests and activity levels.  All are welcome to an afternoon
of free workshops, readings, and interactive games and activities culminating in an evening performance of
Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's As You Like It at 8pm at the Parkman Bandstand. Try your hand at
Shakespearaoke, die your most dramatic death, explore Elizabethan dance, use your best Shakespearean insult,
or simply watch our performances and enjoy a visit to the Town Square.

A Word about Winestein...

Say the words "wine expert" and the average person might think of someone snobbish, like television's Frasier Crane. But Albert Winestein owner Sean Martin, a down-to-earth son of Southie, is a million miles from Frasier and Niles.

The self-proclaimed home of "smart wine, simple cheese," Albert Winestein opened in December 2007. A. W. offers more than 150 different wine labels, along with several domestic and imported craft-brewed beers offered on a rotating basis. The shop also sells several rotating varieties of cheese, as well as fine chocolate bars.

Martin has a refreshing approach to the wine business: "I don't want to make it seem like I know more about wine than everybody else. We're not trying to intimidate anybody." But he does know his stuff, based on years of experience as a bartender, restaurateur, and wine broker (as well as science and phys. ed. teacher and fitness center owner).

Albert Winestein is located at 84 Fairmount Ave. in Hyde Park. They're open Tuesday - Saturday, 4:00 - 9:00 PM - tel. 617-333-6777.

As many of you know, we have a big threat to all state and local programs for schools, public safety, health care, the elderly, environment, youth,  housing etc. because of the Question 1 referendume proposal to end the state income tax. We think we all need to pull together to educate our members, congregants, and residents about the great threat this is to everything we do now and have worked for years for. This proposal got 45% of the vote in 2002 and economic times are maybe even tougher now.

The Social Justice Education Institute is open to all community or school-based educators and youth workers who want to work to build transformative learning communities for young people. The cost is $225 per person, and limited scholarships are available. Boston Public School teachers will earn Professional Development Points for participating in SJEI. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited, so please request registration information as soon as possible.

This is a 3-day training. The dates and times are as follows:

Thursday, August 21 from 3 pm-7pm; Friday, August 22 from 9 am-5 pm, and Saturday, August 23 from 11 am-4 pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The Social Justice Education Institute (SJEI) is a 3-day professional development seminar for educators and youth workers. It is being run by The City School, a nonprofit organization in Dorchester that develops and strengthens the power of youth to work toward building a just society. We do this through creative education and critical thinking, leadership development, action and service, and promoting understanding and relationships across difference.

The City School’s model of experiential learning is effective and powerful for youth, and this same model is equally impactful for adults. With over twelve years of experience, The City School is now engaging educators, as well as our youth, to reflect on and transform their own lives and practices in working toward social justice. SJEI is the culmination of over twelve years of building a powerful learning community where young people are engaged in experiential education.

SJEI’s three-day series of workshops offers participants the opportunity to learn and experience The City School’s pedagogy and model first hand. Just as we do in our work with young people, we challenge educators and youth workers to take ownership of their own education and lives, asking themselves and each other questions such as: How does oppression impact my work with young people? How do we build a powerful, loving community where everyone teaches and learns? What is my vision for collective learning, action, and change?

In school systems where educators are being pressured unrelentingly to create curricula that teach to standardized tests, SJEI offers an alternative path: developing strong social justice-based lessons that promote youth agency, voice and leadership. Participants work together to build transformative learning communities, and learn strategies to inspire the young people they work with to take ownership of their education and become leaders both inside and outside of the classroom.

If you have any questions about SJEI or would like to request a registration form, please contact Alison Gross at alison@thecityschool.org or call (617) 822-3075. Online registration forms and payment options are also available on our website, www.thecityschool.org
