The UMASS
Boston Urban Scholars Program is a
year-round program featuring advanced after-school classes, seminars, tutoring,
supervised study, and a seven week Summer Institute for Boston Public Youth in
grades 6^th-12^th. The Urban
Scholars community believes that education is at the core of
a successful, enriching life. We offer gifted and academically talented
students a comfortable environment promoting learning and educational
exploration.         

During the
Summer Institute the Core Staff, Instructors and Interns work with students to build
the skills and motivation necessary for achievement at the highest level of
their potential. During the seven weeks of the Summer Institute, we work together
to educate, inspire, develop, promote students to be better students and better
citizens

Job Description:

The Urban
Scholars Program summer internship provides talented college
students with an opportunity to learn about careers in education and the non-profit
sector through first hand experience working with youth in an academically
rigorous environment.

We
seek interns who are highly energetic self-starters, creative, innovative,
organized, with great time management skills, a team player and eager to be
part of an active environment.

Serve
as a TA in two courses

·        
Actively
work with your mentor Instructor(s) throughout the seven weeks to provide a
cohesive environment for the students

·        
Periodically
serve as a tutor to students who need extra support and direction

·        
Serve
as co-captain to one of the four competing teams throughout the summer

·        
Provide
a variety of unique and interesting activities each day during afternoon hours

·        
Plan
and implement a workshop on several Fridays in a subject/area that you are
passionate and knowledgeable about.

·        
Interns
meet regularly with the Internship Supervisor

Qualifications:

·        
MUST
be able to commit to the entire summer June 23^rd -August 8^th
and attend all day orientation on Wednesday June 11^th & Thursday
June 12^th.

·        
Be
a College student

·        
Possess
excellent English, Math, Science, History, Art, etc., skills

·        
Experience
working with urban middle and high school students preferred

·        
Enjoy
planning: weekly workshops, talent show, Cultural Day, Yearbook, etc.

·        
Enjoy
participating in some sports and active play (swimming, basketball, football,
soccer, volleyball, etc).

Compensation: Interns will be paid a stipend of $2,500
