Support Neponset River cleanup efforts!

Description:

On Weds, Jan 9, the Neponset River Watershed Association held a meeting regarding a river pollution clean-up project that directly affects Dorchester. The MA State Riverways Program and Division of Marine Fisheries presented final results of their long awaited study on restoring the Neponset River.

The project will clean up high levels of toxic PCBs from the river bottom in Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park. It will also restore historic herring and shad runs to these neighborhoods, and inland towns, by removing two dams.

The project needs widespread public support to move forward. This meeting began the final public comment process, so now is the time to get the facts and make your voice heard!

If you would like information about the Neponset River clean-up, visit www.neponset.org or contact DEHC, 617-474-1478. read more »

Better Beaches Grant Program

Description:

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay has issued a request for proposals for their Better Beaches grant program, designed to jumpstart activity on Massachusetts public beaches from Nahant to Hull. The program was made possible by a generous grant from The Boston Foundation.

The idea of funding local beach programs came out of the work of the Metropolitan Beaches Commission. Proposed programs could include swimming lessons, outdoor concerts, kite festivals, sand castle competitions, or farmers’ markets. Funding ranges from $500 to $5,000. Non-profit organizations, community groups, and less formal “friends” groups are eligible. The simple two page application can be found online at www.savetheharbor.org.

The application deadline is Feb 1, 2008 with funding decisions made by the end of February. There will be an application workshop on January 10. read more »
